I am a Kiwi oboist and teacher based in London. I feel incredibly fortunate that music has taken me around the world - from New Zealand to Australia, across Europe and now to the UK. I want to share everything I have learned along the way and inspire the next generation. I have worked with students ranging from beginners through to Grade 8 and above.
In my family, there was a deal: we would play a sport and an instrument. Sport and music share many similarities, both requiring discipline and resilience, focus and patience, dedication and teamwork. Music is unique because it engages the physical, emotional, and intellectual all at once. It is important for me to foster these skills in my students, to create a strong mind-body connection, and to build good technique from the ground up. I aim for students to develop the tools to become independent, thoughtful musicians who are able to teach themselves. Whether they are working towards auditions and exams or simply playing for enjoyment, my goal is to help them develop a lifelong appreciation for music and a sense of confidence that extends beyond the practice room.
Aside from individual lessons, I have also worked with schools, community centres and youth orchestras. This includes early years workshops at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre and school holiday programmes as a part of London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Overture Days. It is gratifying to see young people connecting with music and to introduce them to new concepts and ideas.
The oboe is a mysterious instrument. Infamously one of the most difficult instruments to make a sound (or make a nice one), we are rewarded with some of the most beautiful, melancholic, and lyrical melodies in the symphonic repertoire. We play the first note of every concert - the tuning A, we sit in the middle of the orchestra - surrounded by the sounds of our amazing colleagues, and … shhh … everyone will be amazed that you play it. Try it out!
